A Shapland and Petter of Barnstaple, Arts and Crafts Dressing Chest, designer probably William Cowie, edges decorated with 'Chequer inlay', swinging bevelled mirror flanked by inlaid panels and small shelves, top over two long inlaid drawers with unusual hammered brass ball handles, raised on shaped feet, drawer locks stamped 'S&P B', retailers plaque to back 'J. Jones', and makers mark R158/ 142, 'Shapland & Petter of Barnstaple, Arts and Crafts Furniture, Daryl Bennett' shows pieces of furniture with the same 'Chequer' inlay, designed by William Cowie. W 95.5 cm x H 150.5 cm x D 54 cm. Provenance: property of a West Country Collector. After buying an Arts & Crafts house, the vendors researched and sought-out beautiful, often unique, Arts & Crafts pieces to furnish their home.
